We get so focused on the big things, the extraordinary things, like traveling to exotic places, getting brand name clothes, getting a new job just because it makes you more money. We often end up forgetting about the little ordinary things, that are actually the most important.
Look, let's face it, for the majority of our time here on earth, we are not going to be doing wildly exciting stuff, like traveling to different countries, going to fancy hotels/restaurants, going on huge shopping sprees, etc. You cannot constantly be living for these moments, if you are constantly living for your next vacation, or if you are always wishing for the weekend to come, you are wasting away the majority of your life. Because if you truly think about it, most of our time is spent at work or at home, and you if you can’t enjoy or be happy with your time at work or your time at home, then you are going to be unhappy for the majority of your life.
Now, don’t get me wrong, We are all guilty of this, at one time or another, especially me. Up until very recently, I’ve spent most of my life dreaming of having a super extraordinary life, always traveling and doing amazing (yet expensive) things, and I was always unhappy. I felt my life was just so mundane because nothing “extraordinary” was happening, and so my solution was to keep changing my life until it was “extraordinary.” I knew I was happy when I was on vacation, going on adventures, and when I didn’t have any worries/problems so I thought, I’m going to make life feel like that all of the time. No matter what I did, whether I changed jobs, moved to different cities, changed my hobbies, it always ended up the same way, with me feeling sad, stressed, and nostalgic for my past.
Something I realized within the last month or two, is that those things are not what’s going to make me happy, in order to be happy you need to be okay with how your life is at this very moment, and you have to learn to be happy with that. You see, the only way to find true joy and happiness is by seeing it in the little things each day, our morning cup of coffee, a coworker who made you smile, dinner with family and friends, study date with your significant other. These are the things you need to be excited for and wishing for because at the end of the day, that is all you have, and if you have the right mindset about it, then that will be all that you need.
I have under appreciated so many moments and friends because my mindset was all twisted up, but I know what is important now. And I know I can’t go back in time to fix things or back to my past life to appreciate more moments with really incredible friends, but I plan on being happy with where I am at now. I will make the most out of every day I live because while it’s definitely not perfect, I am incredibly lucky to have everything that I have.
I hope you take a step back to think about your life right now and make sure that you are not wishing your life away, that you are appreciating every day you have, and that you can find happiness in the simplest of things.
I hope you all have a day full of Grace and Kindness,
