For the past few years, I have had a love/hate relationship with learning, and looking back on it, I think it is mostly because I had the wrong mindset about it. You see, I saw learning as just a way to get to the next step in life like, getting through high school to get to college, and then getting through college so I can get a good job. What I should have been thinking though, is that learning is a huge privilege that I have and that I should be taking advantage of it as much as I possibly can.
This is what I am trying to keep in mind as I come into my next semester of college. I want to want to learn. I have spent the last year switching majors because I’m eighteen and I have absolutely no idea what I want to do with my life, and it has done nothing but stress me out and hate college. I want to appreciate everything that I am getting to learn, I want to take classes because they sound interesting to me not just because I think that’s what I’ll be doing for the rest of my life.
That is probably the best piece of advice that I have for anyone going into to college or already in college, who doesn’t know what they want to do. Just take classes that interest you for now, enjoy learning, take your time, there is no reason that you need to have all figured out right now. You’ll figure what really interests you as you take classes. Please just appreciate learning, there are so many people in the world who will never have the privilege to learn as much as you do.
