Collecting Moments, Not Things
We are all guilty of it. We’ve all done it at least once. We become so obsessed with all the things around us, and how we just want more. We start to need the newest iPhone, we need this season’s trendiest clothes, we need all the new makeup. When in reality, we need none of this. It’s okay to want things, it’s fun to want something new every once in awhile, but it is not okay to obsess over it and to feel like you need it. That material thing is nothing compared to your family, friends, fun memories, the list goes on forever of things that are so much more precious than whatever new material thing we may be wanting right now.
We get so caught up in all these material things that we lose sight of what it really important. A couple of weeks ago, I volunteered at my Church’s summer camp, I’ve been going there for four years now, but this was my first year as a counselor in training (CIT). None of the kids/teens at this camp are allowed have their phones or any electronics for the week, and even though I had my phone on me because I was part of the camp staff, I barely used it besides to take pictures of the kids. And wow, this camp is always such a reality check of how little you actually need every day. Each day is spent two times at chapel, three meals in the dining hall, and the rest is spent outside, playing games, going tubing, having fun with friends. Without phones, or any electronics. You come to realize that we have all this pointless stuff in life and pointless worries.
When all you really need is God, a good home, and to be surrounded by a group of genuinely good people. To keep God as your center, and to focus on being a good person. We don’t need the newest iPhone, that new dress, or the newest eyeshadow palette. We should be collecting moments, not things. Surround yourself with good people to go on new adventures with, to study the word of God with. Those little moments with the people you love are far more valuable than any material thing.
Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth.
